Another Monday, another chance to set our weekly goals and strive to reach them.
Last Monday I set a goal of reaching a certain word count on my current work-in-progress for that week. I'm closing on the end of Sunrise For Three and last week I needed to give myself that extra oomph, if you know what I mean. Every word I claimed and got down on paper was a struggle. Though the words were hard to come by, I pushed forward, all the while my focus on my goal.
When I get close to typing The End, my brain tends to wander back over everything I've written. Did I present this thread of the story right? Do my characters project their motivations in the right light that readers will connect with? Should I go back and change certain aspects of the love relationship?
It's an endless process of brain chatter that prevents me from getting to those two last words. So I have to outsmart myself, quiet the useless chatter, and keep my butt in the chair all in the efforts of getting the book DONE. Even when I don't feel like writing.
On the hard days, I do this by setting small daily goals and making damn sure I meet them. If I want to be taken seriously as an author and have readers interested in my stories, I need to make sure I can deliver them and on time. I can't do that when I let my noisy mind prevent me from getting the word count done.
This week the words are coming easier, the ending all that much closer, and I'm slowly easing into the editing frame of mind. But not just yet. I have to hold that part of my brain at bay while I get the last two chapters written. It's not easy. I want to go back and add layers, fluff, and correct the small areas I know that need my attention. So I wrangle my muse and tie him into a chair with the occasional M&M tossed his way so we can get this thing wrapped up and ready for publication.
So, what do you do to push past the noisy distractions and get your goals done, no matter what they may be?
Here's a little inspiration for you and if you think it could help someone else, by all means share away! I might even print this one out and add it to my motivational board over my desk. It's that powerful!
Rock your Monday...your week...your life! Let them hear you!
